Boardgame Review: Betrayal at House on the Hill

Horror-themed games are a hit in our play group. It gives you a sense of excitement and eagerness to win over it at all cost. Betrayal at House on the Hill is a perfect recipe in a thematic "choose your own adventure" mode of playing. This game is a wonderful collection for those who wants a new adventure everytime you lay it out on the table.

Our playgroup's copy consists of the base game "Betrayal at House on the Hill" and it's expansion "Widow's Walk". You can purchase the base game and it comes with 50 scenarios that you can experience playing, I doubt that you will be able to repeat a story scenario the 2nd time you play it. When you purchase the game expansion "widow's walk" it will add another 50 scenarios making the game even bigger as you have 100 horrific scenarios to experience as you play more and more.

Betrayal at House on the Hill is one of the first games we have played with our friends. This game has a very unique gameplay cause it's re-playable due to the many scenarios you can have. 1 game scenario will vary every time you play it. The changes will depend on how you explore the house. A set of explorers will start as 1 group but as the story progresses, 1 of the explorers will turn into the traitor. It's 1 villain v.s. all the explorers. Talk about a very tragic twist of events! The game starts with the players being given their characters, the characters have a specific trait that sets the group in balance. The traits are physical traits and mental traits. Physical traits cover the speed and might while mental traits cover knowledge and sanity. These traits can be improved or damaged in the course of the gameplay.

Speed = determines the number of movement each player can make per turn
Might = determines the player's strength in combat
Knowledge = determines the player's mental capability (measure of intellect)
Sanity = determines the player's state of mind to be able to face the horrors of the house

The House is set with a starter location (the Landings) and from the entrance, the explorers can venture deeper into the house, discovering new rooms and unlocking secrets. It's a game of chance and sheer luck! Each explorer will be faced by the horrors of the house and the confrontation with these horrors can either strengthen them or put them in danger.

It all falls on your luck with the dice if you can get a better conclusion in the course of the game. Once the haunt is revealed (started), the explorers will be faced with a traitor among the group and from there the house gets to be more dangerous than ever. The game provides 2 sets of rule books: The survival Guide and the Traitor's Tome. Each book will divulge the mission on both ends of the party from which the explorers can team up to outsmart the traitor and the traitor on the other hand will work with the deep dark forces of the house to haunt and win over the explorers, it's a game of cat and mouse, how cool is that?

Everytime a traitor is revealed a cooperative team is formed against 1 player (the traitor). This boardgame has always been a weekend favorite in our playgroup. There was never a game session that we would miss playing it. We recommend this game to all adventure-seeking players out there! This is a must have in every boardgame shelf!

We give this game a 9/10
Happy Playing Everyone!
