Boardgame Review: Potion Explosion!

Think about "Chemistry Class" in a School wherein your role as a student is changed as an apprentice Witch/Wizard and you are having Potion Making Class instead. Reminds you a lot of Harry Potter eh? It's pretty much like that! Your goal in the game is to make a potion by gathering ingredients and also triggering explosions to increase your chances of getting more ingredients from the dispenser.

Potion explosion is a 2-4 player game published by HG (Horrible Games). It comes with a very attractive packaging and game contents that are very appealing to visual-type boardgamers.

here are the contents of the boardgame:

It comes with a Manual, a DIY marble dispenser, 8 kinds of potions, a set of marbles in 4 colors (Yellow, Black, Blue, and Red), 4 sets of Burners, the first player token, a set of skill points, and little help tokens.

The game starts as players are given their own set of burners and 2 starting potions to create. The first player begins by taking 1 marble of any color from the dispenser and if the marbles left bump into the marble with the same color, it triggers an explosion and the player can also harvest those marbles instead of getting only one.

By getting more marbles in a player's turn, he can immediately complete a potion's recipe thus earning him more points as the game progresses.

The mechanics of the game is simply much like the game "candy crush" wherein your goal is to match the same colored candies/jewels in order to trigger an explosion but in this case, the more explosions you create, the more ingredients you can harvest to complete your potions. The game concludes when 1 player accumulates a certain number of skill points and the player with most points wins in Potion Making!

This game is very simple yet it's very fun to play with friends in a weekend. It's strategical and very fast-paced. The game contents are very appealing and who can resist that awesome dispenser of marbles?

We give this game a 6/10
Happy Playing!
